Pulmonology & Sleep Medicine

Pulmonology focuses on diagnosing and managing conditions that affect the lungs and respiratory system. Because breathing is essential to every function in the body, even mild respiratory disorders can significantly impact energy levels, sleep quality, and overall health. At Rowan Diagnostic Clinic, our pulmonology team provides thorough evaluation, advanced diagnostic testing, and personalized treatment plans designed to improve lung function and enhance quality of life.

Comprehensive Lung & Respiratory Care

Breathing comfortably is fundamental to maintaining an active, fulfilling life. Through advanced diagnostics, evidence-based therapies, and ongoing support, our pulmonology team is committed to helping patients regain control of their respiratory health.

Whether managing a chronic condition or evaluating new symptoms, we provide attentive, expert care.

Common Conditions We Treat

Respiratory disorders range from general respiratory conditions to more complex chronic lung diseases. Common conditions we treat include:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Recurrent pneumonia
  • Chronic cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sleep-related breathing disorders

Each condition requires a careful assessment to determine severity, underlying causes, and the most appropriate treatment strategy.

Personalized Treatment Plans

Treatment for respiratory disease depends on the type and severity of the condition. Our goal is to reduce symptoms, prevent flare-ups, and slow disease progression while maintaining daily activity levels. Treatment options may include:

  • Inhaler therapy and medication optimization
  • Nebulizer treatments
  • Oxygen therapy management
  • Steroid and anti-inflammatory medications
  • Smoking cessation support
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation referrals

Pulmonary Function Tests
We use pulmonary function tests (PFTs) to evaluate airflow, lung capacity, and oxygen exchange to help diagnose, manage, and monitor the progression of conditions such as asthma, COPD, and other respiratory disorders.

Integrated Pulmonary and Sleep Care

Sleep-related breathing disorders frequently coexist with chronic lung conditions such as COPD, asthma, or pulmonary fibrosis. By addressing both daytime respiratory health and nighttime breathing patterns, we deliver a more comprehensive treatment plan that improves overall oxygenation, energy levels, and cardiovascular health.

Sleep-related breathing disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea, and sleep-associated hypoventilation, can strain the heart and lungs and contribute to fatigue, headaches, and daytime fatigue.

If a sleep-related breathing disorder is suspected, our pulmonology team will coordinate diagnostic testing such as:

  • In-lab polysomnography (overnight sleep study)
  • Home sleep apnea testing when appropriate
  • Oxygen saturation monitoring
  • Pulmonary function testing to assess underlying lung disease

Treatment is determined by the type and severity of the condition. Management options may include:

  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy
  • Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) therapy
  • Supplemental oxygen when indicated
  • Weight management counseling
  • Coordination with dental specialists for oral appliance therapy
  • Referral for surgical evaluation in select cases

Pulmonary Artery Banding (PAB)

Pulmonary artery banding (PAB) is a surgical procedure that involves placing a band around the pulmonary artery to partially restrict blood flow, helping to protect the lungs from high pressure and volume overload.

PAB is typically considered a temporary or staged intervention. It helps stabilize patients and reduce strain on the heart and lungs while preparing for future corrective surgery.

Pulmonary artery banding may be recommended for:

  • Ventricular septal defects (VSD)
  • Atrioventricular septal defects
  • Complex congenital heart disease
  • Conditions causing pulmonary overcirculation
  • Situations where full repair must be delayed

Coordinated Care through Rowan Diagnostic

Respiratory conditions often overlap with other health concerns such as heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and gastrointestinal reflux. Our pulmonologists collaborate with primary care providers and other specialists within and outside of Rowan Diagnostic Clinic to ensure coordinated, comprehensive treatment.

This integrated approach improves communication, streamlines testing, and supports better overall outcomes.
